Shiraz

There is no real evidence to link the Shiraz grape with the ancient Persian city (still a major city of Iran) of the same name. Wikipedia describes such stories as "legends".

It's the same grape that's known in France as Syrah. The name Shiraz first found popularity in Australia, and this is the country with which it is most closely associated. The Scottish winemaker James Busby ("the father of Australian viticulture"), who first imported the grape to Australia in 1831, is known to have listed it as "Scyras"; it's easy to see how this might have been transcribed (possibly verbally) into Shiraz.
